| Review:The Prima Donnas Drugs, Sex & Discotheques Peek a Boo Records, 2001 If you believe the liner notes, the Prima Donnas were a three gay English orphans who traveled the world in the 80s synth pop scene. Some investigation on the web suggests they were a mid 90's Austin band which briefly terrorized Olympia, as well. The British accents couldn't be more phony, and the mix of Dadaist ridiculousness (the NBA references in "Freaky Zone") and grotesqueness (I'm never gonna swallow down...) makes this very Texan. They're sort of a queer version of the Butthole Surfers. Isn't it great that we live in a world were you get a queer version of the Butthole Surfers? Their dinky dual Casio sound was real ahead of the time, though. This is every bit as catchy as the Capricorns - way too perfectly Atari 2600 to have actually come out in the 80s. "Regan's Dead" is a great anthem for this or any year- it wasn't true when they recorded it, and it sure ain't true now. "Skin of Another Man", "Nance Music" and "Freaky Zone" are great dance pop that turn disturbing the more you listen to the lyrics. "Headful of Pills" and "Stoned like a White Balloon" would be sad and moving if they weren't oozing sarcasm. How did this great band slip through the cracks? posted Friday, January 02, 2004 |
