Spam Names, part III
First the names on spam sounded like NFL players. Then they sounded like 90 year olds. Now they sound like Groucho Marx characters.

Cromatics
Plaster Hounds
Gold Standard Labs

Scrawny unfunky dub-rock like English boys made right after punk. This record reminds you of how vast the influence of Lee Perry's Black Ark recordings were, because none of these songs evoke reggae, but couldn't have existed without the Upsetter, even if his influence is third-hand. Chromatics sound like Swell Maps and Roland S. Howard's various solo projects- distant vocals, fierce but slack rhythms, jangly guitars, and buried alive atmosphere.

This is album is worth listening to start to finish, to let its whiteout wasteland envelop you. It reaches it's peak (or its gutter) in the four minute sludgy slowdown of “Monarch”, which takes the sinking feeling to it's most extreme end. It's the most oppressive cut here, but it makes most sense in the context of the guitar songs which surround it. It's not unlike the frightening music Liars have just thrust upon us. So, if the 3AM deejay hasn't shown up, drop this one in the player for 30 minutes, and give Durham's insomniacs nightmares. All spooky

Red Eyed Legends
The High I Feel When I'm Low
Gold Standard Labs

Scrawny unfunky indie rock with some dub influences. Actually, “Hamlicus (Super Indoor)” out-ganjas their labelmates Chromatics for gothic dub muck. It is mighty. The rest of it is more typical Chicago noise rock, made by some veteran noise guys. They're named after a line from a Germs song, and the singer howls and berates like Darby Crash, but this is more self-conscious and Albini influenced. The tracks with keyboards work better than the plain guitar tracks, and they've since added Kiki Yablon from the Dishes as a full time keyboard player. On one of the tracks, he says "Ooooh la la!" That's hard to resist.
